How to Update an Outdated Business Website

This is one of the most common situations we hear about: a site that was fine years ago, built by a freelancer or agency that's since gone quiet, now looking dated and possibly broken on mobile. The good news is that starting over is usually more straightforward than it feels.

First, figure out what you actually own

• ·Domain name — check whether it's registered in your name, at a registrar you can log into. If you're not sure, your domain registrar's "WHOIS" lookup or support line can usually confirm.
• ·Hosting account — do you have login access to wherever the site is actually hosted? If the old developer controls it and won't respond, you may need to start fresh hosting under your own account.
• ·Content and photos — pull whatever text and images you can from the current site before it changes hands. Even outdated copy is useful raw material.

If you don't have access to the domain or hosting and the original developer isn't responding, you're not stuck — you can register a new domain (or, with more effort, recover an existing one) and rebuild independently. It's a hassle, but not a dead end.

What's usually worth keeping

The domain name, if it's already got some history and local recognition. Any copy that's still factually accurate — service descriptions, your story, pricing philosophy. Photos, if they still represent the business well. Everything else — the design, the code, the platform it was built on — is usually better left behind rather than patched.

What a rebuild actually looks like

A full rebuild doesn't have to mean a long, expensive, opaque process. Look for a studio that will show you a real, working sample of the new site before asking for payment — that way you're judging something concrete, not trusting a stranger's promises the way you might have the first time.
